Peacock feathers

The cold winter months are almost over, our thoughts turn to cleaning, freshening-up our home with new decorative arrangements. What do we see sitting there useless, sad and forlorn? The fireplace with it gapping space, empty now of its glow and warmth, offers us a challenge. Are we up to the task? You bet. Begin with the sandblasted grapewood log base. Select peacock feathers and spray, cattails in Bordeaux, for the background. Glue them to the base, adjusting the height and width, as you go. Add flax grass in assorted mix of brown/Bordeaux/mango, monkey pods in mango, mahogany pods in green, papaver and spiral cones in natural color. Glue the grass, pods, papaver and cones at random heights and thickness spreading them out from one end of the wood to the other. Make it pleasing to your sight. Keep the arrangement full, but do not cover the wood base entirely. For a final finished touch set this beauty on a bed of spread out (sort of messed-up look) of ruffled –up raffia in color of your choice.

Here we are with March coming in like a lion, bringing us a new spring season, fresh new growth, new birth and new aroma in the air. So much to celebrate, St. Patrick’s day, Lent, and the Easter holiday. My thoughts turn to Jesus on the cross, his suffering, crucifixion and dying for our sins; that whosoever believeth on him shall not perish, but have everlasting life, setting us free from eternal death. What better way to use or time and talents than to make a cross to commerate the season. Bend and shape a grapevine garland to fit on a wooden base. Glue peacock feathers, basil buri tips, placing them in staggered lengths, going up and down and across. Mix in basil flax grass/basil curly willow. In the center of the cross add several Tilandsias in green. Form a crown from the grapevine and hang on the top edge of the cross. Remember to “Crown him Lord of All”

A simple option to keep the season in hearts and mind, try this. Place your bible on a coffee table, opened to a favorite verse. Lay a single palm leaf across the center page; include a peacock feather or two. Kneel down in prayer, giving thanks to be free to worship in this great USA.

Being a crafty person, I’m always in search of something unique. Recently my daughter Lisa brought this idea to me, credit goes to her friend Donna; who decorated a stretch canvas to hold a photo. Begin with eighteen x twentyfour canvas, or size of choice, paint a color of choice. Glue peacock feathers around the edge of the canvas, forming a frame type border, overlapping at the tail ends and quills. Mix-in basil rattail millet/basil yarrow. Add polished palm caps, where quills are exposed, using several at the right top and bottom left corners, keeping a balanced look. For more color and interest slip-in a few basil pineapple buttons. Glue photo or document on the blank canvas area. For a more finished look, glue a few buttons and millet to edge of framed item. Fix your arrangement like you want before you glue it all down, using more or less of the above mentioned content. Create/Enjoy.

For a simple, this is an easy decoration, begin with a grapewood base. Add bell caps in color of choice. Hide an Easter egg, with snipped-off flax grass in each cap. Glue peacock feathers and swords at random. Mix-in basil flax grass, leaving it airy. Tickle the fancy of your family and friends.
